Wontons make for fantastic hors d’oeuvres – they’re warm, delicious, and perfect as a finger food. But don’t be fooled by their simple appearance – they pack a flavorful punch!
Ingredients
Servings: 30
- 1 package of Ovoline mozzarella (about 15 pieces, cut in half to make 30)
- 1 egg
- 15 fresh basil leaves (plus more for garnish)
- 30 wonton wrappers
- 1 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 cup tomato sauce
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash.
- Wash and dry the basil leaves, then slice them into thin strips.
- Place half a piece of Ovoline mozzarella onto each wonton wrapper.
- Sprinkle basil strips on top of the mozzarella.
- Brush the edges of the wonton wrapper with the egg wash, then fold and press the edges together, tucking the ends underneath. Let them rest for about a minute.
- Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Be careful not to overheat or use too much oil.
- Fry the wontons for about a minute on each side, or until golden brown.
- Transfer the fried wontons to a paper towel to drain any excess oil.
- Serve immediately with tomato sauce for dipping.
