Basil is native to the warm climates of Asia, with India and ancient Persia as the likely place of origin. The original Purple Ruffles Basil plant was developed by Ted Torrey, who was once the director of research at the W. Atlee Burpee and Company. It was a cross between a dark opal variety and a green ruffle variety. Released in 1984, the plant went on to win the All-America Selections in 1987 for a plant grown from seed. Purple Basil is often used as a natural dye for a variety of products.

Purple basil can be substituted for traditional basil in almost every recipe but it adds to food presentation because of its rich purple color. Try using purple basil in a colorful Caprese salad to impress your friends or a basil lemonade.
