History

Native to India and ancient Persia, basil has been cultivated for centuries. It is told by ancient legend to have healing powers. In many cultures, Basil is a symbol of love, protection and truth in many cultures. Interestingly, in Ancient Greece and Rome, basil represented hate and misfortune, and growers would often shout at their plants, believing it would help them grow. Due to divisive opinions regarding basil, there was no consensus on whether or not basil contained health benefits or was poisonous. Today, basil is used medicinally. Its oil is often used to treat depression, anxiety, colds, coughs, sore throats as well as insect bites and stings.
